HOUSTON, TX (November 21, 2014). Musiqa, winner of the 2013 Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, presents the second in its inaugural series of programs at Houston’s new arts complex, the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston (MATCH), January 9 at 7:30pm. The program includes a series of works by eminent American composers working in a wide variety of musical styles: Donald Crockett‘s Wet Ink for violin and piano;David Crumb‘s Mood Sequence for cello and piano; Sean Friar‘s Scale 9 for clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion; Pieter Lieberson‘s Raising the Gaze for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion; Stacy Garrop‘s Remnants of Nine for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion; and Dan Welcher‘s Remembrance in Black and White for soprano and ensemble. As part of its focus on collaboration with artists in related fields, Musiqa invites Inprint’s Rich Levy, who will round out the program with readings of poetry. Finally, “The Infinite,” a poem by Levy, will be performed in a new setting by Musiqa artistic directorAnthony Brandt.
Following Musiqa’s successful season opener at the MATCH, audiences will doubtless be excited to revisit the beautiful space, which boasts a spacious stage balanced with a surprisingly intimate concert experience. Musiqa is furthermore pleased to bring back several musicians that audience members will recognize (including soprano Karol Bennett, percussionist Blake Wilkins, flutist Leone Buyse, clarinetist Michael Webster, and conductor Jerry Hou), as well as several performers making their performing debuts with Musiqa.
Musiqa will host a special interview with composer Dan Welcher before the concert. KUHF host St.John Flynn will host the interview onstage beginning at 7:15 PM.
