Winner of eight awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Musiqa returns to The Hobby Center’s Discovery Series with “Around the World with Musiqa.” The longest running education program in the series and now in its 12th season, “Around the World” is an interactive concert created by Musiqa composers, that introduces elementary school students to folk songs in multiple languages. It shows how composers bring the shared music of a community to life in imaginative ways. “Around the World” also features a stellar cast of musicians and performers, led by Musiqa resident artist, soprano Karol Bennett.
During this run, Musiqa will give its 100th educational concert, and welcome more than 4,000 public school students and teachers from more than 45 schools in the greater Houston Area—free of charge to the students and schools. Before the concerts, Karol visits each school leading them in a workshop to encourage student participation during the show. As the children hear and sing songs in different languages, they gain an appreciation of music’s cultural diversity.
Since 2004, Musiqa’s education programs have served 50,000 students, from 130 schools, in 8 Houston area school districts.
