2020/2021 season
As we face the many challenges brought on by COVID-19, the physical health and safety of our collaborators, patrons, friends and loved ones remains our top priority. At the same time, we remain deeply dedicated to the cultural health of our community. Musiqa has been presenting world premieres, innovative productions and educational opportunities to Houston audiences for 18 years.  The challenges we face now have encouraged us to think about new ways of working and presenting this work going forward, but have done nothing to dampen our enthusiasm for our mission. We look forward to continuing to be a spark in Houston’s artistic community: sparking collaboration, innovation and beauty that reflects what we are all capable of.
STARS: A World Premiere by Trevor Weston

Trevor Weston’s music has been called a “gently syncopated marriage of intellect and feeling.” (Detroit Free Press) In 2019 his Juba for Strings won the 2019 Sonori/New Orleans Chamber Orchestra Composition Competition. Musiqa has commissioned him to create a new work, based on the poetry of Robert Hayden, to premiere in the fall of 2020. This commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.

The Houston Chronicle has called Open Dance Project one of the “top three for reminding us that art is essential, not a luxury, to maintaining our humanity.” These innovative dance artists team up with the composers and musicians of Musiqa to premiere a new work in January, 2021.
