“The Sound of Houston” travels to elementary schools — integrating new music, an original script, and interactive activities to explore Houston’s natural ecosystems through the perspective of an echolocating bat.
“The Sound of Houston” is an interactive, TEKS-aligned musical experience in Fine Arts and Science for elementary students. This 50-minute program features an original script and score for narrator, mezzo-soprano, violin, clarinet, cello, and recorded animal sounds, exploring Houston’s natural ecosystems through the perspective of an echolocating bat. Students participate by singing, identifying animal sounds, using body percussion, and playing a musical call-and-response game. The 40-minute performance is followed by a 10-minute instrument demonstration and Q&A with the students. The experience also includes a pre-show educational handout, allowing students to familiarize themselves with scientific concepts and vocabulary integrated into the show. Designed for accessibility, this program supports arts learning for elementary schools across the city and can travel to any performance-friendly space. No buses or field trips required.
